PRIORITIES

Today, I begin a new message series called “Building Blocks.” We will explore key “blocks” that we need to have firmly in place for 2009 to truly be great!

You see every year, we need to make “shifts” and “adjustments” to our lives that will help us become more Christ-like. One such “shift” or “adjustment” is in our daily priorities.

This is simple, yet hard to do. Prioritizing your life is making decisions concerning what is of most importance to you and aligning your actions with those decisions.

If we don’t prioritize our lives (decide what is most important to us), someone else will; or rather our circumstances will. Today you will be challenged to set your priorities – you know, take charge, make those decisions as to what is of most importance to you and then align your actions with those decisions.

Take the challenge: Reflect on what is of most importance to you and the make the decision to align your actions with those priorities. You will be glad that you did today, but especially at the end of 2009!

Happy New Year,

Jeff Powell

Building Blocks 09

Can you believe it? Another year has come and gone! 2008 was great in many ways – great with joy for many and great with pain for some. And I believe great with triumph through Jesus for all!

Every year, we need to make “shifts” and “adjustments” to our lives that will help us become more Christ-like. You could call it a “tune-up” of sorts for our lives.
As we approach the dawning of a new year, I would like to help us all start this year off in the right direction.

Next Sunday, January 4, I will begin a new message series called “Building Blocks.” During this series we will explore key “blocks” that we all need to have firmly in place for 2009 to truly be all that it has the potential to be in our lives!

We will explore such “blocks” as priorities, growth, leadership, and community. Marked with practical application and an illustrated approach to help you put into practice each “building block,” this new series will help you start 2009 off in the right direction!

Happy New Year,

Jeff Powell

Christmas and Gifts...

Christmas – everything surrounding this “event” communicates giving and receiving gifts! From childhood memories (positive and negative) to adult experiences with giving and receiving gifts, we could all reflect on the reality of Christmas being about giving!

And some gifts are certainly more special than others. In fact some gifts are one of a kind gifts that keep on giving. Allow me to explain…

Nearly 12 years ago, Jane and I celebrated the birth of our firstborn son Tyler one week after Christmas, 10 years ago we celebrated the birth of our daughter Allie, and 5 years ago we celebrated the birth of our second son Austin one week before Christmas. These births have been gifts that keep on giving through the wonderful joys and challenges that come from raising children!

THE GIFT that was the best Christmas gift ever given was the birth of Jesus Christ. This gift continues giving to this day. Jesus was given to us for the forgiveness of sins, the promise of Heaven when we die, and life abundant on this earth while we live. Christmas = Jesus!

Let us all share the gift of Jesus with others while receiving the gift of Jesus fresh and new ourselves during this Christmas Season!

Merry Christmas,

Jeff Powell

Incredible Opportunities...

There are two incredible opportunities that I want you to take advantage of…

First, next Sunday, December 21 will be our Christmas Celebration worship service. I will preach a life-changing message called “His Story Can Change Your Story!” Statistics tell us that people are very open to being invited to church during the Christmas season – let’s take advantage of this great opportunity and invite someone to attend with us next week!

Second, February 6-8, 2009 will be ReNew 09 – Growing your church one home at a time! This conference-style event will be very strategic for 2009! International consultant and best-selling author Joel Comiskey will lead this dynamic conference. I want you to save the date NOW – Friday, February 6 (7 – 9PM) and Saturday, February 7 (9AM – 4PM)!

Fellowship Church, God has given us clear purpose to lead people to become followers of Jesus! And God has given us a clear vision to accomplish our purpose: Large Group Gatherings, Small Groups, and Training. The two opportunities mentioned above will move us forward in this direction – let’s take advantage of them!

Peace and Parties...

Peace in the midst of financial difficulty can be yours! God says that as we obey Him, blessings will follow (see Deuteronomy 28:12-14)! On Sunday, I will be sharing on this vital topic. As you obey God with your finances, you can expect God to move mightily in your behalf. Let us grab hold of powerful truth; which leads to supernatural provision!

On Sunday, I want you to sign up for a Christmas Party! The time is short and I want you to attend a party and invite non-believers to attend with you. At these parties all will be invited to our December 21 Christmas Celebration called, “His Story Can Change Your Story!”

Please sign up in the Welcome Center on the bulletin board if you have not done so already. And may I suggest three parties that still have room on Saturday, December 13? Karin and Richard Pfuntner, Amy and Chris Whitfield and Anna and Paul James – sign up for one of these or another of your choosing!

Please help fill these parties and fill Fellowship Church on Sunday, December 21!

Relationship Help!

Relationships are tough! The BEST and WORST is bought out of two people through RELATIONSHIPS.

At times we are tempted to choose faking them rather than working them or leaving them rather than developing them.

Even the disciples wanted to avoid certain relationships due to the challenges they bring (see Matthew 19:10)! We are made for relationship. The Bible offers help…

1. Relationships provide power and protection (Ecclesiastes 4:9-12)

2. Blessing others reverses any curse from others (Romans 12:14).

3. Words bring life or death in our relationships with people and God (Ephesians 4:29-32).

4. Forgiveness is essential in any and every relationship (Ephesians 4:32).

5. Loving submission to each other is vital to relational health (Ephesians 5:21).

Jane and I love you! I pray that we will all work to make the BEST of every relationship we have!

No Fear!

Fear is a nasty thing that cripples far too many people. Fear of the unknown, fear of change, fear of confrontation, fear of failure, and even fear of success – all are far too prevalent in our lives as followers of Jesus.

When fear grips us, faith walks out. Our perspective changes from one of security to one of insecurity. Doubt enters. Discouragement knocks at the door. We say and do things we normally would not – all due to fear.

Yes, fear is real regardless of the cause or validity. So what do we do? I’m glad you asked ☺.

1. Arm yourself with Truth. At times fear operates in the realm of the unknown. Truth exposes the lies that empower fears grip on you.

2. Ask Jesus for help – not in defeat and despair, but boldly as His son or daughter. The Bible says we are to come boldly to the throne of grace in our time of need (see Hebrews 4:16).

3. Act on the truth you know and the help Jesus gives through the Holy Spirit. This takes faith, but hey, that is what pleases God (Hebrews 11:6). We are called to BOLDLY ACT in like manner as a powerful lion (see Proverbs 28:1)!

I speak freedom over you from all fear in Jesus name! Arm, Ask, and Act – your AAA to counter fear.

Jane and I love you and appreciate you so much!

Christmas Already?

The cold snap this past week has gotten me in the “holiday mood.” Christmas will be here before we know it!

Speaking of Christmas, we are planning 15+ Home Christmas Parties during December 8-17 as a church!

These parties will be relaxed, fun, and a great way to connect many to the Fellowship Family! The plan is to bring one non-churched or non-believing person with you to these parties. And each visitor will get a great gift!

Please plan to attend a party and pray about who the Holy Spirit would have you to invite to attend with you!

Our goals for these Christmas Parties are:

1. Connect the non-churched or non-believing to the Fellowship Family in a safe, non-threatening way.

2. Invite the party attendees to our special December 21 Christmas Celebration worship service.

3. Form a new network of healthy small groups through many “parties” continuing to meet in 2009.

Jane and I love you and are so proud of you!

Let's Party...

Over 45 people have been attending small group and practical leadership training.

Many of these participants will lead our Christmas Parties during December 8-17. And we want you to attend a party and bring another non-churched or non-believing person with you.

These parties will be relaxed, fun, and a great venue to connect many to the awesome Fellowship Family! And each visitor will get a very practical gift from us!

In the coming weeks you will hear who the leaders of these parties are. Please pray now concerning who the Holy Spirit would have you to invite to attend with you!

Our goal for these Christmas Parties is three fold:
  1. Connect the non-churched or non-believing to the Fellowship Family in a safe, non-threatening way.
  2. Invite many to our special December 21 Christmas Celebration worship service.
  3. Form a new network of healthy small groups through many “parties” continuing to meet in 2009.
Fellowship Church, I am expecting great things for us all. Jane and I love you and are so thankful for you!

Time to Party!

We have much reason to celebrate – to have a party – God’s way and God’s style! Psalm 150 declares…

“Praise the Lord. Praise God in his sanctuary; praise him in his mighty heavens. Praise him for his acts of power; praise him for his surpassing greatness. Praise him with the sounding of the trumpet, praise him with the harp and lyre, praise him with tambourine and dancing, praise him with the strings and flute, praise him with the clash of cymbals, praise him with resounding cymbals. Let everything that has breath praise the Lord. Praise the Lord.”

Yes, we need to have a party – God’s style – by allowing everything within us to praise God, no matter how we feel and no matter what we are facing! And praise to God even silences the attack of the enemy (see Psalm 8:2).

God is active in our midst healing, redeeming, and restoring. Vision is being re-birthed. Lives are being changed. And Jesus is still King no matter what!

Will you offer up praise to God today? He is ready to receive all of your praise - let go and let God!

Fall Festival...

The College and Career ministry led by Michael Kelley are leading this year’s fall event called Trunk or Treat on Friday, October 31 from 6:30 – 9:00PM! I’ve asked Nicole McManus to give us the details…

“What we will be doing is having volunteers use their vehicles. The trunk / back will be decorated in some type of theme or game (as creative as they like). Kids will go around to each vehicle to get candy or a prize or even play a game. We are also going to have concessions set up in the MPC, selling hotdogs and hamburgers. And there will be a band and a hayride.

The college and career would love to do this by themselves but if that happened, we would have only 5 vehicles. So that is where you come in. We need help. We need people to volunteer to come out with their trunks decorated. You can partner with another family or you can just do one your self. Our goal is to have at least 30 vehicles.

We also need volunteers for concessions, floaters (where ever we need an extra hand), and candy donations. It will be fun and safe for the kids in our community and a way for us to minister to them.

If you would like to volunteer, please sign up on one of the sign-up sheets in the Welcome Centers. If you have any questions you can email me at mcmanus.nicole@yahoo.com or call Pastor Michael Kelley at (352) 514-5117.”

Thanks Nicole! Fellowship Family, let us step up to the plate to make this a great success!

Election Time...

Periodically we hold church-wide voting to confirm or deny what your core leadership discerns is God’s direction for us as a church. Today, you are being presented with several items for consideration that will be voted on October 12. Allow me to explain…

First, myself and your Deacons are proposing five amendments to our current By-laws. The fact that we as a church have by-laws and are seeking to keep them updated should be comforting and encouraging to us all!

We have posted a listing of these proposed amendments along with our current complete Constitution and By-laws online by CLICKING HERE (user name is “fellowship” and pass code is “prayer”). Paper copies of both are also available in the Main Welcome Center. Please view these online or physically.

Second, your Administrative Team is presenting Kay Crawford and Doug Lawson as nominees to serve on the Administrative Team.

This is a total of seven individual items for your prayerful consideration. Myself, your Deacons, and your Administrative Team are excited to put these items before you for your vote on October 12!

God's Highway...

Last week, Darla Greer e-mailed me a journal entry she had recently written. With her permission, I thought it would aid your journey as it did mine. So enjoy…

“Life is full of twists & turns….definitely not a straight path. We are faced with choices each day, some which require ‘yielding’ before moving forward. Of course, we can feel it’s our right to stop or go ahead and not yield. That decision may cause us to get off course or worse to derail us completely.

What does yielding mean? First, be alert and cautious…look around before we move. Second, to proceed (with caution), go forward, don’t stop!

God is constantly giving us opportunities to yield to Him and others in Christian authority. By yielding to Him we aren’t growing complacent, stagnant or staying the same….we are flowing in the journey.

What does yielding mean to you? It may mean giving up old ideas or plans and going in a new direction. It may be moving over to a new ‘lane’ to allow others to go ahead of you…releasing them as new leaders.

Without a doubt yielding to God’s will is the only way to find peace and success in this life that Christ saved us to live. Not always easy, but essential.

Go in peace and watch as you go for God wants to bless you.”

Thank you Darla for sharing this with us all!

Total Victory Can Be Yours!

You can have TOTAL VICTORY in every area of your life – yes you! Gone are the days of believing that others could have victory, but not you – I say NO MORE!

God has provided a way – a path – for you and me to live in TOTAL VICTORY. Victory is defined as “an act of defeating an enemy or opponent in a battle, game, or other competition.

Jesus said in Luke 10:19, “I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you.” WOW! Are “snakes and scorpions” figurative of an “enemy or opponent” in life? YES!

So what are the steps to living in TOTAL VICTORY?

First, we need to recognize what or who is our enemy or opponent. Second, we must believe that what Jesus told us is really true – He indeed has given us His authority for victory. And finally, we have got to “trample” these “enemies or opponents” in life – we have to take action of some sort to enforce the victory that is ours in Jesus! Faith is not faith until there is action taken (James 2:26).

Where are we going?

It has been said that knowing where you are going is half the journey to getting there! Proverbs 29:18 echoes this by saying, “Where there is no revelation (vision) the people cast off restraint…

Our focus (purpose) as church is to lead people to become followers of Jesus! After much prayer and planning we are going to seek to do this through weekly worship services, small groups, and intentional training. What does this look like specifically in the Fall?

First, on September 7 we will transition to two worship services (9:30 AM & 11:00 AM). Children’s Ministry (Son Seekers, Cross Trainers, and First Steps) will be offered at both services. Youth Bible study will occur at 9:30 while Adult Bible studies will occur at both 9:30 and 11:00.

Now, you may be asking, “What about children whose parents will be at Fellowship Church for both worship times?” GREAT QUESTION! These are your options: 1) Children can attend Son Seekers or Cross Trainers again. 2) They can attend the adult worship service with you. 3) They can attend “Kiddie CafĂ©” (ages 3-Kindergarten) or “Kid CafĂ©” (1st – 5th grade) – a new interactive, relational environment to aid spiritual growth!

Second, on September 10 we will shift the focus of Wednesday nights in part. We envision an initial group of potential leaders being trained for 12 weeks in the basics of leadership with an emphasis on small group leadership. Existing leaders (Son Seekers, Cross Trainers, College and Career, and Worship Ministry leadership teams) will also meet on Wednesday nights to continue preparing and planning. Prayerfully both of these leader sets – existing leaders and potential leaders – will also gather for a time of prayer and intercession!

You may be asking, “What about children?” Again, GREAT QUESTION! First, we have planned intentional Bible Study for these children while parents are involved in training. Second, our Student Ministry will continue their weekly worship service on Wednesday nights.

Third, over the course of the Fall, we will begin a new network of small groups. The starting place for this will be our planned Christmas Parties December 8-17. You will hear much more about this in October!

Fellowship Church, communication is never perfect. If you have questions, please e-mail (pastor@fellowshiponline.org) or call (386-454-1700) and our staff will seek to provide answers so we can all know where we are going!

I am so proud...

I am proud when people shine Jesus to others…

Two Sunday’s ago, Michael Kelley preached and the College and Career Ministry led a powerful drama. I am so proud of Michael for taking the step of faith to preach and I am so proud of the College and Career Ministry for being willing vessels to God. You can watch the video of the drama by clicking here!

Three weeks ago, Damon Baudoin and the Student Ministry, with the help of the College and Career Ministry, began to renovate the Café. It looks AWESOME! I am so proud of Damon and our students for their CREATIVE and EXCELLENT work all for the glory of God!

Two weeks ago, 3 Fellowship Church families went to the foreign mission field. I was so proud as our children ages 2-11 and adults (I’ll skip the age part) fed hungry children, painted walls, poured concrete, ministered to marriages and led 27 people to become followers of Jesus!

Thank all of you for allowing Jesus to shine through you!

Reflections on Change...

Change is defined as “to make or become different.” Easy? No way! Fun? Sometimes! Needed? You bet!

Change is needed in our lives daily, not just periodically. We are the called out ones the Bible tells us. We are to be different the Bible tells us. We are to be renewed day by day the Bible tells us. We are to be changed into the very image of Jesus the Bible tells us!

King David cried out to God, “Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me.” (Psalm 51:12) Restore = change. Salvation = change. Willing spirit = change. King David cried out, “Change me!” He knew that only God could do it.

I need God to change me. I need Him to change all the junk within me into the sweet aroma of His presence and power. He said in His word that this is our destiny, our calling – to be changed into His likeness (2 Corinthians 5:17)!

Change – “to make or become different.” God is ready. God is willing. God is able. He is making us different (distinct) even now in Jesus name!

Reflections, Retractions, and Refreshing...

Fellowship Family, as your pastor there are times when I say things that I sure wish I could take back – things that don’t come out quite right – things that come form wrong motives – things that at times are more flesh than spirit. James 3:2 says, “We all stumble in many ways. If anyone is never at fault in what he says, he is a perfect man, able to keep his whole body in check.

Last Sunday, I said some things in the message that I really wish I could take back. I want to acknowledge some of the areas that God has dealt with my heart on and seek your forgiveness for any negative hurt caused…

I told those of you that were struggling with moving Sunday morning Bible study to Wednesday nights to “just get over it!” Although there are certainly many things that all of us need to “get over,” my tone was not fully loving and my motive was out of frustration – which was wrong. Please forgive me for this wrong.

I also said “I never speak against other preachers and pastors – never.” Although I don’t demean other preachers / pastors, there are times when some of you have approached me with questions about what others have said either on radio, TV, or in print and I have given you my opinion, which at times has been against what those preachers / pastors have said.

Probably the most hurtful rather than helpful thing that I said last Sunday was something to the effect of “The same people that were upset with your former pastor are now upset with me – identical across the board.” This was a generalized statement that mischaracterized nearly our entire church. And this statement caused negative hurt among some – for that I am very sorry!

I am your pastor and yet I am still on a journey of healing and wholeness with Jesus in my own life! It is always good when the Holy Spirit deals with our hearts and leads us to the waters of truth and cleansing – such has been the reality in my life this week and for that I joyfully praise Him!

Vision Shifts - Part 5 of 5...

Our focus is to lead people to become followers of Jesus! We seek to do this through APPROPRIATE large group gatherings, AUTHENTIC small groups, and APPLIED training - we are here to build people!

In this fifth of five, I share vision transitions happening…

Bethlehem – After months of prayer and discussion, our core leadership has decided to forego this year’s Bethlehem so that we can re-focus our energies on our purpose. We exist to lead people to become followers of Jesus! Foregoing Bethlehem will allow us to put our full energies towards large groups, small groups, and training – all to fulfill our purpose (see Matthew 28:18-20)!

January / February, 2009 – The 20+ Christmas parties to be hosted December 8-17 (see last week’s Pastor’s Thoughts) will prayerfully lead to small groups that continue to meet in January and beyond as the first stage of a new network of small groups. Then on February 6-8 we will host ReNew 2009 with special guests Joel Comiskey and Terry and Arlene Dupont. This will be a powerful time of RENEWAL and RECOMMITMENT!

God has given us a clear mandate in His word to lead people to become followers of Jesus (see Matthew 28:18-20)! By His grace and favor the vision shifts that I have shared during the last 5 weeks will allow us to effectively live this mandate out.

Loving and Leading,

Jeff Powell

Vision Shifts - Part 4 of 5...

Our focus is to lead people to become followers of Jesus! The direction of our church is how we seek to do this through APPROPRIATE large group gatherings, AUTHENTIC small groups, and APPLIED training. How?

We are not here to build programs - we are here to build people! This requires changes in our thinking and approach to ministry itself. This fourth of five I continue sharing vision transitions that are happening…

Small Group Training – As we grow larger, we must grow smaller through vibrant and healthy small groups! On September 10 we will begin training potential small group leaders. This will form the base of a strong, exciting, and growing network of small groups!

Christmas Parties – We have blocked off December 8-17 as a time to host 20+ home Christmas Parties. These parties will serve as an avenue to give a gift to all the visitors that attend – what a way to serve our community and build people in the process all while having fun!

In the next Pastor’s Thoughts I will share vision shifts concerning Bethlehem and January / February, 09.

Vision Shifts - Part 3 of 5...

God has given us a vision that is larger than North Central Florida! We have a vision to do our part to reach the world with the love of Jesus. This is the third in a series of five about vision transitions happening…

Our focus is to lead people to become followers of Jesus! How do we move toward this internationally?

Direct Support – 10% of every non-designated contribution given to Fellowship Church supports mission’s endeavors. We have partnered with missionaries in Pakistan, India, Africa, and all of Central America to feed children, educate pastors, and tell people about Jesus! Our goal is to see our global partnerships strategically increase in the coming years.

Short-term Trips – In conjunction with financial support of missionaries, we also physically GO to help these missionaries. We have sent teams all over the world to help missionaries reach people with the love of Jesus! Our goal is to see short-term trips increase in the coming years, especially to places such as North Africa and Southern Asia where the Gospel is available the least!

In the next Pastor’s Thoughts I will share vision shifts about small groups and Christmas Parties in December.

Loving and Leading,

Jeff Powell

Vision Shifts - Part 2 of 5...

This is the second in a series of five concerning vision transitions that are happening…

Our focus is to lead people to become followers of Jesus! The direction of our church is how we seek to do this collectively and individually through APPROPRIATE large group gatherings, AUTHENTIC small groups, and APPLIED trainning. How do we move toward this?

Dual Worship Services – On Sunday, September 7 we will launch two identical worship services (9:25 & 10:55), which will include full children’s ministry at both. Why do this? First, space – we have exceeded our 80% capacity in floor seating and need to expand our ability to continue reaching people. Second, opportunity – you will be able to serve in ministry on Sunday AND not miss worship!

Bible Study Transitions – On Wednesday, September 10 all but two of our current Sunday morning Bible Study classes will begin meeting on Wednesday’s. Our goal is to eventually implement intentional training for a beginning follower of Jesus all the way to a leader in the Kingdom of God. Moving classes to Wednesday night will be the first step for this to become a reality!

In the next Pastor’s Thoughts I will share vision shifts concerning MISSIONS at Fellowship Church.

Vision Shifts - Part 1 of 5...

Fellowship Church, I am excited and convinced of the Spirit-led direction of our church!  Yet, I know that confusion and fear can exist when changes are made.  During the next few weeks in my Pastor's Thoughts, I will share with you vision transitions that are happening...

Summer Son - During the summer I will preach a series of messages exploring some of the "hot sayings of Jesus" - thus the name, Summer Son!  To illustrate this series, feel free to wear your Caribbean shirts and flip-flops.  You may even need your shades, as some of the sayings of the "Son" are really hot:)!

$10 Challenge - Our core leadership (staff, deacons, and administrative team) has issued a challenge for everyone to give $10 extra each week in the offering above your normal giving.  If you have not been giving, this is a great place to start giving!  As we give, two things will happen:  1) Ministries will be funded.  2) You will be blessed.  God responds to faith (Hebrews 11:6) and giving expresses your faith (Luke 6:38)!

In the next Pastor's Thoughts I will be sharing about two vision shifts coming up in September.

Loving and Leading,

Jeff Powell
